How to apply for housing

You can apply for a house with either your local council or to a housing association.

Most councils in England are housing authorities: they run a register of people who want to get council or housing association housing and also provide a homelessness service.  If you have problems with an application for housing, there are a number of organisations who can help you.

If you have nowhere to live now, or are about to lose your accommodation, you are homeless and can apply as homeless to a council for housing. The council does not have to give housing to all homeless people.

If you have somewhere to live, but want to find somewhere better, or more secure, you can apply to go on the council housing register.
