If you are a new arrival please visit this section for more information...
This website will help you discover the housing and housing benefit rights of new migrants - whether they are European nationals, refugees, people with indefinite or limited leave to remain, or new arrivals from A8 countries or elsewhere.
Across the top of this page there are tabs which take you to the pages we have written on advising different categories of new arrivals. These are listed in more detail below. To see the information aimed at new arrivals themselves, providing guidance to their housing and housing benefit options, go the opening 'new arrivals' page and use the tabs and other links from that page.
The tabs above direct you to pages on:
- advising refugees and people with discretionary leave, humanitarian protection and exceptional leave
- advising people with indefinite leave to remain
- advising people with limited leave to remain
- advising people fleeing domestic violence
- advising people with social care needs
- advising accession state nationals - people from the 'A8' EEA accession countries
- advising Bulgarians and Romanians
- advising EEA workers and self-employed people
- advising EEA family members
- advising other EEA nationals
Here are more links to a set of background pages we have written for advisers. They cover:
- who are the new migrants?
- the law on housing eligibility
- the law on entitlement to housing benefit
- housing associations and local authorities - the legal differences in relation to housing of new migrants
- what is 'discrimination' in housing?
- documents to support housing and housing benefit applications
- what is the habitual residence test?
- links to other organisations that might be able to help you
